French Dip Roast Beef Sandwich with Caramelized Onion

(Family Features) - Convenient and affordable, sandwiches are a timeless brown bag lunch favorite. But sandwich lovers are finding new ways to spice up traditional flavors with fresh ideas, according to the 2009 Shopper Insights Sandwich Deep Dive survey conducted by Kraft Foods.

Current sandwich trends include unique flavor combinations, hot sandwiches and updated takes on classic combinations.

To help brown bag aficionados spice up their routines and stay on trend without breaking their budgets, the Oscar Mayer brand enlisted 10 creative and cost-conscious mom bloggers to develop flavorful sandwich combinations.

Each of these innovative takes on the traditional sandwich incorporates one of four bold new varieties of Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Shaved Meats: Black Forest Ham, Cracked Black Pepper Turkey Breast, French Dip Flavored Roast Beef and Cajun Seasoned Chicken Breast. Sliced, packed and sealed at the peak of freshness, these meats deliver the fresh-taste of the deli but are more convenient and cost 25 percent less than the best selling brand of deli counter meats.

Among the tasty creations are a hot Deli Fresh Cajun Chicken and Cheese Melt that calls for chipotle mayo, Roma tomatoes, Romaine lettuce and provolone cheese on top of ciabatta bread; a tricked-out version of a classic Turkey Sandwich that includes Deli Fresh Smoked Turkey, tomato, avocado, cucumber slices and a squeeze of lemon; and a Cuban Sandwich topped with Swiss cheese, dill pickle and Deli Fresh Slow Roasted Roast Beef.

French Dip Roast Beef Sandwich with Caramelized Onion

  • 1 large red onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Miracle Whip Salad Dressing
  • 2 teaspoons horseradish sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 4 diced marinated sundried tomatoes or homemade roasted tomatoes
  • 4 onion rolls or sub buns
  • 1 package Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Shaved French Dip Roast Beef
  • 4 slices Kraft Deli Fresh Cheddar Cheese Slices
  • 1 cup fresh arugula

    1. In small skillet, cook onion with sugar and 1 tablespoon water on medium heat for 10 minutes until onions are brown, soft and caramelized. Set aside.
    2. Mix Miracle Whip, horseradish sauce, Dijon and sun-dried tomatoes in small bowl. Spread on sandwich roll bottoms. Top each sandwich with roast beef, cheese, arugula and onions. Place tops on each bun, place on sheet pan and bake in preheated 350ºF oven for 15 minutes until warm and toasty, or grill in Panini grill on medium heat 2 minutes until browned.
    3. To make homemade roasted tomatoes; slice 2 Roma tomatoes 1/4-inch thick, place on baking sheet, sprinkle with olive oil and kosher salt. Bake in preheated 300ºF oven for 1 hour.
