Mediterranean Burgers

(Family Features) With the simple addition of an unexpected ingredient, you can capture the adventurous spirit of summer at the dinner table with a health-smart variation on traditional summertime dishes.

Hummus is an excellent replacement for mayonnaise or other sauces on a variety of sandwiches and burgers. Fresh and creamy, it is made from a blend of chickpeas, tahini (ground sesame), and a variety of herbs and spices.

Aside from the classic hummus, which pairs well with pita crisps or veggies for a simple summer entertaining appetizer, there are a variety to choose from that are inspired by flavors for the world.

Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Pine Nut and Spinach & Artichoke are popular options that can be used in a variety of dishes such as chicken salad or as a healthy dip or spread.  Or, for more adventurous palates, Sabra recently introduced two new flavors: Basil Pesto and Buffalo Style, a worldly take on an American favorite.

With so many varieties available, there is plenty of room to experience new flavors and create unique authentic dishes with minimal effort. As a starting point, try Mediterranean Burgers with Hummus, which can be prepared indoors or out.

Experiment with different hummus flavors to create a whole new taste each time. Or if you're entertaining, provide your guests with several options so each can create their own worldly adventure.
