(Family Features) Building a heart-healthy diet starts at the grocery store ... so how heart smart is your family's shopping cart?
According to a recent Porter Novelli Styles survey of more than 4,000 Americans, conducted on behalf of Welch's, there is a gap between knowing the heart-health benefits of common foods and actually putting them into the shopping cart. Two-thirds of Americans recognize that red wine, salmon, oatmeal or olive oil are heart-healthy foods. However, a fraction of these same consumers buy these foods on a monthly basis.
Many consumers think heart-healthy foods won't taste good or they are simply too time consuming or costly to cook. However, the good news is that it can be easy to "heart your cart" with foods that are simple to prepare, convenient, affordable and delicious.
For example, as a complement to fresh produce, 100 percent grape juice made with Concord grapes makes it easy to add a boost of delicious purple fruit to a heart-healthy diet. Each 4-ounce glass counts as 1 serving (1/2 cup) of fruit - with no added sugar. And, while 66 percent of consumers know that a glass of red wine is good for the heart, they don't realize that many of the same heart-healthy plant nutrients in red wine are also in grape juice made with Concord grapes.

Heart Health History
While heart smart eating is essential, your genes can also affect your health. With that in mind, Welch's has created the Welch's Family Vine Tool, an adaptation of the U.S. Surgeon General's tool, which gives you the ability to gather and share your family's documented heart-health history with your health care provider and loved ones.
