Swirled Black Forest Cake

Makes 12 servings

  • 1 package (18.25 ounces) chocolate cake mix (such as German chocolate, devil's food or chocolate fudge)
  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 2/3 cups (10-ounce package) Nestlé Toll House Swirled Real Semi-Sweet & White Chocolate Morsels, divided
  • 1 container (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed, divided
  • 1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling, divided

    1. PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Line two 9-inch-round cake pans with foil extending over sides. Grease and flour foil.
    2. PREPARE cake mix with water, oil and eggs according to package directions. Stir in 2/3 cup morsels. Pour evenly into prepared cake pans.
    3. BAKE cakes for 24 to 28 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Carefully sprinkle remaining 1 cup morsels over tops of cakes while still hot out of the oven. Cool cakes completely in pans on wire racks.
    4. To Assemble - REMOVE cakes carefully from pans by lifting foil. Peel off foil and place one layer morsels-side-up on cake platter. Top with 1 cup whipped topping and 1 cup cherry pie filling. Top with second layer. Serve each slice topped with remaining 2 cups whipped topping and 1 1/3 cups pie filling. Refrigerate leftover cake.
