Description
A recipe for Gingerbread

Ingredients

  • Butter to grease baking dish
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup light molasses
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Preparation
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch-round baking dish with butter.

2. Melt 1/4 cup butter in small saucepan over low heat. Be careful not to let butter burn. Turn off the heat, and let the butter cool.

3. Crack egg into a medium mixing bowl. Beat the egg with a wire whisk.

4. Add buttermilk, molasses and melted butter to the egg. Mix well.

5. Measure flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cloves, ginger and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl. Mix them together using a fork.

6. Pour liquid ingredients into the flour mixture. Stir with spoon to make a smooth batter.

7. Pour batter into the baking dish.

8. Bake the gingerbread on center rack of the oven for 25 to 30 minutes.

9. Check to see if the gingerbread is done by inserting a toothpick into the center. If the toothpick comes out clean, the gingerbread is done.

10. Take the gingerbread out of the oven. Let it sit for about 5 minutes.

11. Cut the gingerbread. Serve it warm with powdered sugar or whipped cream on top.
