Marketing Institute: The Cherry People
The Cherry Marketing Institute (CMI) is a national promotion and research organization funded by U.S. cherry growers. CMI promotes tart cherries, which are sometimes called "pie cherries." Tart cherries make great pies and other desserts, but this ruby-red, tangy fruit also adds appeal to appetizers, side dishes, entrees and beverages. Research indicates that tart cherries have powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can help in the prevention of cancer and heart disease and relive the pain of arthritis or gout. Sweet cherries have a dark red, burgundy color. That are often frozen, canned or turned into maraschino cherries - a fun food that is a signature garnish and ingredient in many taste-tempting recipes.
CMI's goal is to increase demand for cherries through market expansion and promotion. CMI provides promotion materials and other information to retailers, food manufacturers, restaurants, schools and the media. The CMI's staff has in-depth expertise on cherries and can answer questions or direct inquiries to other appropriate sources. For consumers, CMI offers recipe brochures and other usage ideas. CMI maintains a Web site at www.cherrymkt.org.
